Here in DC

Well, i've spent the last 9 days in Washington DC while my son has been at Walter Reed (He is doing wonderful btw :)) and the energy has been high here. It has been amazing to see so many people come together here to see history being made before their eyes. Happy faces, good attitudes, the sense that change is now and we are all a part of it.  Barack Obama came to see some of the wounded soldiers the day before his inauguration and my son was one of them, so inadvertently I got to meet him.  Very cool. Thank you to everyone who wished my son a speedy recovery, he has been healing very well and once he was able to get up and move around, there was no stopping him. He was so very lucky.

”It is the Veteran”

It is the VETERAN , not the preacher,
who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the
VETERAN , not the reporter,
who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the
VETERAN , not the poet,
who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the
VETERAN , not the campus organizer,
who has given us freedom to assemble.

It is the
VETERAN , not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the
VETERAN , not the politician,
Who has given us the right to vote.

It is the VETERAN ,
who salutes the Flag,

It is the VETERAN,
who serves under the Flag, !

THANK YOU

Road trip

I'm heading out this morning on a road trip to West Virginia.  Never been there before so i'm taking my time and enjoying the sites along the way.  I'm stopping in Chicago to see my sister for a day then i'm off again.  Amanda Young is going to be in Virginia this weekend, not too far from where i'll be, so I might take another short drive to see her.  I've never been there either so i'm hoping that the leaves are starting to turn and I get a few good pictures.

Weekend Trip

My guy and I went to Chicago for the weekend.  We used to live there but moved away about 20 years ago.  Sometimes its nice to go and play the tourist and explore Chicago and the neighborhood we grew up in.  Some things are so different that I have a hard time believing that it used to be home. But there are some things that never change, like the family owned  restaurants in the neighborhood (there are 2) that have the best food around,  The Sears Tower, Lake shore Dr., the museums, all the little things that take me back to the day.  This is the reason that after all these years, when I think of home , my mind just thinks Chicago.

Got a call

My son called me from Afghanistan and wished me a happy birthday.  We didn't get to stay on long, only about 5-6 minutes, but it was good to talk to him.  It made my day.

Took my mom out for her birthday

yesterday.  My sister and I took her to a supper club near our houses that has performances held there.  They had a group of 4 boys that called themselves 'Forever Plaid'.  They were a lot of fun to see.  They were part stand up comedy, part play and part singing.  Those boys could HARMONIZE.  It had a late fifties early sixties theme and was very entertaining.  This place has 25 acres of gardens and walking trails and a 2 acre tree maze.  It was very beautiful.  We thought my mom would like it and she did.  She's only going to be 60 once, so we wanted to make it a memorable one.

The phone call

My son called last night before I went to bed and told me that he had just gotten a call and was told he would be shipping out and had 24 hours to pack up his belongings.  His deployment date had been changed a few times but now his plane will be taking off at midnight  tonight.  As a parent you try to put your best face forward and support your child when they need you, but now that the moment for him to leave is here, I have to say that it really just sucks. I'm sure i'm not the only parent or family member to ever feel this way.  All I can do is send him off with our love and support and the knowledge that we'll be here waiting for him when he comes home.

my yard

The The roses are finally starting to bloom this year.  These were originally from my mom's house.  She said they had taken over her yard and asked that I help her cut them back.  They were everywhere and these were parts from the ones we removed.  I didn't think they would grow because they roots were kind of mangled, but they thrived (just SLIGHTLY out of control).

Here is the bush that's all most as big as the tree.  The top of the bush is as tall as my house.

I enjoy this time of year.

Road trip

I've taken a short trip to Green Bay for the weekend.  I've lived in Wisconsin for almost 17 years and had never made it into this area.  Now that i'm here I wonder why I hadn't done it sooner, its a beautiful drive.

Home projects

My guy and I have had an ever growing list of 'things to do' around the house and have decided that now is the time to get them done.  This week we replaced the sink and faucet as well as the chipped tiles in the kitchen. The stove finally died so we bought another one and love it.  We have also decided to replace the roof and gutters and the quote was only about three grand.  I really expected it to be higher, but am so glad for a lower than I thought estimate.  Lastly, we're replacing the large living room window. We haven't decided if it will be with a bay window or four regular ones (the window we have now is huge).  Once that is done then we can repaint and finish up the trim.   I'll be glad when its done and we can look at it all with a smile.

Humor

You have to laugh. You finally get to open all your windows and enjoy the  lovely spring weather (it was in the 50's yesterday) and you then look outside this morning and see snow falling ever so gently to the ground.  Yea.
